Ali’s Peruvian Thanksgiving Adventure Part 3 – The Plot Thickens… But Will the Pie?

Read Part 2

Adventure Part 3

Alright, we’re not having Thanksgiving Dinner until tomorrow, but I decided to bake my pie now, to tease myself and everyone else horribly but also to be out of the way of the turkey cooking tomorrow, as the kitchen is not the biggest.

So I found a recipe that gives me these ingredients:

  • 2 cups pumpkin puree
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp cloves
  • 1/4 tsp allspice
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups evaporated milk

I didn’t have white or brown sugar, just yellow sugar, so I kinda combined them, but that was the only issue.  I managed to find all my spices!

Spicey!

Spicey!

So I started combining the ingredients in a blender, because that’s a bit easier than mixing them all I thought.

This is before I put in the spices, so I know it’s the wrong colour.  But man, it is super-runny.  After I saw it all mixed, I decided that I DEFINITELY should have taken out at least some of the evaporated milk before blending it all; now it’s far too well mixed to even be able to separate the ingredients.  Stupid blender.  Stupid recipe.  So I decide that I am going to add the rest of the pumpkin puree, I have another 3/4 cup approximately.  Unfortunately, it doesn’t make hardly any difference.

So I panic.  I don’t know anything at all about baking!   Remember part one of the adventure where I say I’ve never made a pie before?  I don’t know what it’s supposed to be like, but I’m pretty sure it’s not supposed to look like this at all.  I’ve ruined Thanksgiving!  I’m a horrible person, like the Grinch, taking away enjoyment from six people who were counting on me to provide them with a delicious dessert!  I talk to myself.  I talk to everyone else.  Chris, one of the volunteers, is a good cook, but he doesn’t bake.  He offers me encouraging words like “maybe it’ll all evaporate”.  I don’t believe him.  He tells me to have faith in the recipe, which I DID follow.  Except for the sugar bit.  But I don’t know what to do!  It took me most of the day to do all the little steps of this adventure, and I don’t have enough ingredients to do it again!  Nor do I have the time, if they’re going to be cooking the turkey tomorrow.

I have no choice.  I add the spices (and a touch of flour for good measure), and pour it into the pie crust.

There is no way this is going to work.  All I can do is put it in the oven and cook it for way longer than I am supposed to, and have faith.  Maybe we’ll have a Thanksgiving miracle!
