One of Ayacucho city’s claims to fame is the sheer number of churches (33 apparently, but if you include little chapels it is much more). I think this is because it used to be a Spanish frontier town and they were trying to bring religion to the heathens. It really is a cute little colonial style city and, while I definitely have not seen all 33 churches, there seems to literally be one on every block. Like Starbucks.
