I have had some weird hot beverage experiences in Latin America, my favourite being asking for “tea with milk” and been given hot milk with a tea bag. I also had some excellent hot chocolate in Costa Rica, with fresh-out-of-the-cow milk, fresh-off-the-cane sugar, and fresh-from-the-bean cocoa. In Bolivia I used to have hot chocolate all the time that was spiced with cinnamon, but this adventure takes the cake.
I was at a lunch place in Ayacucho today where there was an item on the menu of “hot chocolate.” The fine print underneath said something about “hot milk with chocolate dissolved” which I thought was a strange translation.
I understood when the drink arrived: hot milk, with little chunks of chocolate I was supposed to add to the milk!
