Salineras

Another really cool place that we visited was Salineras, the salt mines. Neil, my stepdad, confessed to me after that at first he was not sure why I wanted to bring them to a salt mine.

After seeing them, however, he is a convert.

I’m not sure how old the mines are; they are still in use today and definitely not an archaeological site. Basically how they work is someone discovered an underwater river of saltwater that came out of the earth at Salineras. The locals have created an intricate (and very cool-looking) system of trenches and pools, where they divert the stream to fill various shallow pools, wait for the water to evaporate, and then harvest the salt. Cool!
