Garrapata

We are now in Chachapoyas, which is the road-not-taken version of Cusco, in the Northern highlands of Peru.

I was expecting it to be tiny, and foreign, with no other white people around. Chiclayo, my last stop, was medium-sized, with no white people around. But here in Chachapoyas, after being here no more than 6 hours, had an encounter with a girl named Janine.

Janine was a fellow Canadian, from British Columbia, who had been in Máncora (a beach in Northern Peru) and found a stray cat in a gutter. The cat was only about one week old, had hundreds of ticks, and some sort of eye infection.

Janine decided to keep the cat, took her to a vet, bought medicine for about S/. 20, and now has brought her to Chachapoyas and is the most adorable little kitten I have ever seen.

Her name is Garrapata.
